The AN/PRC-152 is a handheld, single-channel tactical radio developed by Harris Corporation (now L3Harris) as part of the Falcon III series. It is a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) that replaced multiple legacy systems by integrating several frequency bands and waveforms into a single, ruggedized unit. It is the most widely fielded handheld radio in the U.S. military and many NATO forces.
Software-Defined Architecture: Compliant with the JTRS (Joint Tactical Radio System) SCA. This allows the radio to be updated with new waveforms and encryption algorithms via software, ensuring it remains relevant as technology evolves.
NSA Type 1 Encryption: Certified by the National Security Agency for the transmission of data up to Top Secret. It utilizes the Sierra II programmable crypto module to support various secure modes including VINSON, ANDVT, and AES.
Multiband Capability: It covers a massive frequency range (30 MHz to 512 MHz), allowing it to communicate with ground troops (VHF-low), aircraft (VHF-high/UHF), and satellites (UHF SATCOM).
Embedded GPS (Optional): Many variants include an internal GPS receiver that provides situational awareness by displaying the operator's coordinates and allowing for automatic position reporting (PLI).
SINCGARS: The standard VHF frequency-hopping waveform used by ground forces for secure combat net radio communications.
HAVEQUICK I/II: A UHF frequency-hopping waveform used primarily for ground-to-air and air-to-air communications to resist jamming.
VULOS: VHF/UHF Line-of-Sight for standard AM/FM analog and digital voice.
UHF SATCOM: Supports DAMA (Demand Assigned Multiple Access) for beyond-line-of-sight satellite communication.
APCO P25: Allows interoperability with civilian emergency services (police, fire, EMS).
SRW (Soldier Radio Waveform): Available on the PRC-152A (Wideband) variant, providing high-speed networking for data and video.
The PRC-152 is typically issued to Team Leaders, Radio Telephone Operators (RTOs), and JTACs. Its ability to "bridge" different units—such as a squad on the ground communicating with an F-16 overhead—makes it a critical tool for Close Air Support (CAS) and joint operations.
Due to its iconic status, many non-functional or "airsoft" replicas (TRI, TCA, FCS) exist. These are often just Baofeng-style radios inside a PRC-152 shell. The genuine L3Harris unit is a controlled defense article and is not available for legal civilian purchase.
