The FN 509 is a modern, polymer-framed, striker-fired handgun born from FN’s submission for the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun System (MHS) trials. Since its debut, it has expanded into one of the most comprehensive pistol families on the market. It is known for its rugged "battle-ready" construction, fully ambidextrous controls, and a grip texture that many shooters find to be among the most secure in the industry.
Tactical Lineage: The 509 was built to exceed military durability standards. FN famously tested the platform with over one million rounds during its development to ensure reliability across all variants.
Low-Profile Optics Mounting System: FN’s patented system is widely considered one of the best in the industry. It uses a specific plate-and-spacer system that allows the optic to sit very low on the slide, enabling a true co-witness with iron sights without needing excessively tall "suppressor sights" in many cases.
Fully Ambidextrous: Unlike many competitors that only have a reversible magazine release, the 509 features a dual-sided magazine release and dual-sided slide stop right out of the box.
Cold Hammer-Forged Barrel: FN uses its signature machine-gun-grade stainless steel for the barrels, featuring a recessed target crown to protect the rifling from damage and ensure long-term accuracy.
The Edge models are FN's high-end factory-custom offerings:
LS Edge (Long Slide): Features a 5-inch barrel and a lightened slide with porting. It includes a flat-faced trigger that breaks at a crisp 90-degree angle, significantly improving over the standard 509's hinged trigger.
CC Edge (Compact Carry): Includes a unique, tool-less auto-indexing compensator. This device reduces muzzle flip by 25% and can be removed with a simple 90-degree twist for cleaning—no tools or timing shims required.
CC Edge XL (New for 2025/2026): Mates the compensated CC Edge slide with a full-size 17-round frame, offering a "best of both worlds" setup for those who prioritize shootability over deep concealment.
The Trigger: Standard 509 models use a hinged trigger design. While duty-grade and safe, it is often described as "gritty" by enthusiasts. Many owners upgrade to an Apex Tactical trigger to achieve a smoother pull. (Note: The Edge and MRD-LE models come with a vastly improved flat-faced factory trigger).
Grip Texture: The stippling is very aggressive. It’s excellent for shooting with gloves or sweaty hands, but some users find it "bitey" against bare skin during long-term concealed carry.
