The FN Five-seveN is an iconic, polymer-heavy pistol built specifically around the 5.7x28mm cartridge. Originally developed alongside the P90 submachine gun to replace the 9mm NATO round with something capable of defeating body armor, it has evolved from a restricted military tool into a favorite for civilian sport shooters and personal defense. It is famous for its "zippy" ballistics, high capacity, and a recoil impulse that feels more like a .22 Magnum than a centerfire duty pistol.

Key Design Elements

• The 5.7x28mm Cartridge: This bottlenecked round is the heart of the pistol. It travels at high velocities (often over 2,000 fps), resulting in a very flat trajectory. While the armor-piercing SS190 duty rounds are restricted, civilian-legal loads still offer high accuracy and low recoil.

• Polymer-Encased Slide: In a unique engineering move, the Five-seveN uses a steel slide encased in a polymer shell. This reduces the reciprocating mass, contributes to the gun’s light weight, and protects the slide from corrosion.

• 20-Round Standard Capacity: Despite its slim grip, the Five-seveN holds 20 rounds in a flush-fitting magazine. Because the cartridges are small and lightweight, a fully loaded 20-round magazine weighs significantly less than a 15-round 9mm magazine.

• Internal Hammer Action: While it looks like a striker-fired gun, the Five-seveN actually uses an internal single-action hammer. This provides a clean, consistent trigger pull that is generally superior to standard striker-fired duty guns.

• Safety Positioning: The manual safety is located on the frame directly above the trigger. This allows the shooter to manipulate it with their trigger finger (for righties) or thumb (for lefties), a layout that is unconventional but highly intuitive once mastered.

The MK3 MRD is the most significant update in the gun's history. It addresses the two biggest modern complaints about the platform:

1. Optics Integration: It features a factory-milled slide with a plate system compatible with almost all micro red dots (RMR, DeltaPoint Pro, etc.).

2. Ergonomics: The frame was completely redesigned with a more aggressive, modern stippling and refined serrations on the slide and trigger guard for better control under stress.
