The FNS-9 Compact (often designated as the FNS-9C) is the smaller, concealable version of the FNS-9 duty pistol. Released in 2015, it was FN's answer to the Glock 26 and M&P9 Compact. It managed to scale down the full-size FNS architecture without sacrificing the fully ambidextrous features that define the series.
While it is now discontinued and largely replaced by the FN 509 Compact, the FNS-9C remains a favorite on the secondary market for those who prefer the original FNS ergonomics over the newer 509 updates.
Versatile Magazine Capacity: The FNS-9 Compact typically ships with two types of magazines that change the gun's personality:
12-Round Flush/Pinky Extension: Keeps the profile short for maximum concealment.
17-Round Extended: Uses a full-size FNS-9 magazine with a grip sleeve, giving you the same handle length and capacity as a duty pistol.
Compact Dimensions: It features a 3.6-inch cold hammer-forged barrel, making it noticeably more compact than the standard 4-inch FNS-9 but slightly larger than a true "subcompact," which aids in shootability.
Full Ambi-Controls: Unlike many compacts that lose features to save space, the FNS-9C retains the dual-sided slide stop and dual-sided magazine release.
Snag-Free Design: The slide and sights are specifically contoured with rounded edges to prevent the gun from catching on clothing during a draw.
Trigger System: It uses the same pre-set striker (Double-Action) trigger as the full-size model, typically breaking between 5.5 and 7.7 lbs.
Many owners of the FNS-9C wonder if they should upgrade to the newer 509 Compact:
Magazines: Major Benefit: FNS-9C magazines are compatible with the FN 509 Compact.
Optics: The FNS-9C was never factory-milled for optics. If you want a red dot, the 509 Compact "MRD" is the modern choice.
Grip Texture: The FNS-9C has a milder "pyramid" texture, whereas the 509 is much more aggressive and "sticky" in the hand.
Sights: The FNS-9C has a larger front sight dot for faster acquisition in defensive scenarios compared to the original full-size FNS.
