Hemostatic Bandages
Hemostatic agents such as Celox, QuikClot, and Hemcon are designed to rapidly promote blood coagulation during traumatic wounds, especially those involving arterial bleeding. Widely accessible to EMS professionals and first responders, these products are approved for use at all training levels in some regions. Initially used on the battlefield, they are now also employed to stop bleeding in workplaces, motor vehicle accidents, and at-home incidents.
QuikClot was the first hemostatic agent adopted by the US Military, with QuikClot Combat Gauze remaining a favorite. Advances have introduced chitosan-based products like Celox, which are safe and effective. Celox granules are particularly useful in cases like scalp avulsions, where they eliminate the need for later removal of gauze. For packing penetrating injuries, gauze-based products are more suitable. Hemostatic gauze dressings with chitosan, such as Celox, Chito-SAM, and Hemcon, quickly and safely stop blood flow from severe wounds. The Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) has long recommended QuikClot Combat Gauze for all branches of the US Military.
