M18 Colored Smoke Grenade

The M18 Colored Smoke Grenade is a pyrotechnic signaling device used extensively by the U.S. military and allied forces. Designed as a ground-to-ground or ground-to-air signaling tool, it emits a vibrant, dense cloud of colored smoke. It is a critical asset for marking landing zones, identifying friendly troop locations, or screening tactical movement during maneuvers.

Key Features

Vibrant Visuals: Available in four distinct high-visibility colors (Red, Yellow, Green, and Violet) to allow for specific code-based signaling (e.g., "pop red for medical," "pop green for extract").

Rapid Deployment: Utilizes a standard M201A1 pull-ring igniter with a short time delay (approximately 1.2 to 2 seconds) before smoke emission begins.

High Volume Output: Burns for 50 to 90 seconds, creating a substantial cloud that remains visible for significant distances from the air or ground.

Cool Burning (Relative): Unlike the white phosphorus (WP) grenades which burn hot enough to cause severe injury and fires, the M18 is a "cool burn" pyrotechnic. However, the canister itself still gets extremely hot and can ignite dry grass or debris.

Color Coding: The top of the canister is painted to match the color of the smoke it produces, ensuring the operator grabs the correct signal in high-stress environments.

Common Applications

Signaling Aircraft: The primary method for ground troops to mark their location for helicopter landing zones (LZ) or close air support.

Target Marking: Used to identify enemy positions for air or artillery strikes by throwing the smoke as close to the target as possible.

Screening: Provides a temporary visual curtain to obscure the movement of a squad across a street or open danger area (though the M83 White Smoke is preferred for large screens, the M18 is often used for quick concealment).

Wind Indication: Allows pilots to instantly judge wind direction and speed at ground level before landing.

Training Note: For force-on-force training where pyrotechnics are prohibited, Ring's Manufacturing produces a Blue Gun M18 replica. It is a solid, weighted piece of blue polyurethane used to practice the physical mechanics of carrying, equipping, and throwing the grenade without the fire hazard.
