Training Replica: S&W Model 60-3"

The Smith & Wesson Model 60 with a 3-inch barrel is a refined evolution of the world's first stainless steel revolver. While the standard 2.125-inch "snubnose" version is a dedicated pocket gun, the 3-inch variant transforms the J-frame into a versatile "Kit Gun"small enough to carry all day, but with a full-length ejector rod and improved ballistics that make it a serious woods and self-defense tool.

Core Engineering Features

• J-Magnum Frame: Modern 3-inch Model 60s are built on the reinforced "J-Magnum" frame, allowing them to safely fire .357 Magnum in addition to .38 Special +P.

• Full-Length Ejector Rod: Unlike the shorter 2-inch models, the 3-inch barrel allows for a full-stroke ejector rod. This ensures that spent casings (especially the longer .357 Magnum brass) are completely cleared from the cylinder during a reload, preventing "hang-ups" under stress.

• Adjustable Sights: Most 3-inch variants come equipped with a pinned ramp front sight and a fully adjustable rear notch. This is a significant upgrade over the "trench" sights of smaller snubbies, allowing the user to zero the gun for specific bullet weights (e.g., heavy 158gr woods loads vs. 125gr defensive loads).

• Enhanced Velocity & Radius: The extra inch of barrel provides a longer sight radius for better accuracy and increases muzzle velocity, ensuring that expansion-sensitive hollow points perform as intended.

Technical Specifications

Operational Advantages

• The "Shrunken 686" Feel: With its full-length underlug and adjustable sights, the 3-inch Model 60 handles like a miniature version of the legendary L-frame 686. It offers a "pointability" that smaller revolvers lack.

• Recoil Management: Because it is an all-steel gun (weighing ~24 oz), it is much more comfortable to shoot than the lightweight "Airweight" models. While .357 Magnum is still "snappy," the extra weight helps keep the muzzle down for follow-up shots.

• Versatile Carry: While too large for most pockets, the 3-inch Model 60 excels in IWB (Inside the Waistband) or AIWB (Appendix) holsters. It remains thin and flat, making it disappear under a t-shirt while providing a full-sized grip for a secure draw.

• The Ideal "Trail Gun": Its stainless construction makes it impervious to sweat and rain, while its ability to fire heavy .357 hard-cast loads makes it a viable defensive option against four-legged threats in the backcountry.

Specific Dash Numbers to Note

• Model 60-4: The highly sought-after .38 Special version with a 3" full-underlug barrel and adjustable sights (pre-lock).

• Model 60-10: The first 3" version chambered in .357 Magnum (often referred to as the "micro-686").

• Model 60-15: The modern production version featuring the internal safety lock ("Hillary Hole") and a 3" barrel.
