Trick-or-Treat Safely 2020

Sweets, treats, costumes, parties and more! Halloween is quickly approaching and many people all over the world are getting eager to celebrate the spooky season. 2020 has brought its fair share of challenges as each of the different holidays approach and Halloween is no different. It is important for us as a society to still celebrate these holidays that are important to us while also thinking about the safety of your family and the safety of the many other families who plan to celebrate Halloween as well.

Our top priority is safety! So, if your family still plans on trick-or-treating this year then make sure you are keeping the following social distancing practices in mind to help keep everyone safe.

  • Stay at home if you are feeling sick
  • Keep your trick-or-treating groups smaller (perhaps only go with people you live with)
  • Remain 6ft apart from people who are not in your group/family
  • Wear a face mask covering both your mouth and nose (even under/over any Halloween mask)
  • Take hand sanitizer with you to frequently use while out and especially before eating or after coughing/sneezing
  • Make sure to wash your hands when you return back home
  • If you do not plan to go out and trick-or-treat but still plan to hand out candy here are some tips to help create a safe setup for your neighborhood treaters.

  • Do NOT hand out candy if you are sick
  • Wear a face mask to cover both your mouth and nose
  • Use duct tape to mark 6-foot lines in front of your home leading to your driveway/front door
  • Position a distribution table between yourself and the trick-or-treaters
  • Wash hands often
  • Here are some bonus tips for parents to help keep your children safe while trick-or-treating.

  • Stay home if you are feeling sick
  • Educate your children about important safety precautions and social distancing guidelines
  • Help guide your children to stay on the right side of the roads/walkways to ensure social distancing
  • Carry a flashlight at night and reflective clothing if you plan to stay out late
  • Wear a face mask that covers both your mouth and nose
  • Wash your hands as soon as you get back home
  • Inspect your children’s candy
  • There are also other fun ways you and your family can celebrate Halloween without going trick-or-treating. Your family can host a virtual costume party/competition for friends and family by using an online video chat application. You can stay in and decorate the inside of your house for a spooky movie night where everyone can dress up as their favorite characters. Carving pumpkins is always a fun tradition to enjoy with family and friends. Then there is always the option to stay home and make delicious Halloween-themed treats that can include anything from jack-o’-lantern pizzas, to ghost shaped Rice Krispie treats, or bat shaped cookies.
