We know during certain times throughout the year we have extreme seasons. Not just Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. For example, we have a Monsoon Season in Arizona which occurs between June and September. We have a Tornado season on the East side of the Rocky Mountains between March and June. We Also have a Hurricane Season from June to November.
These seasons can bring about natural disasters that cause serious destruction to our homes, lands, and streets, creating a crisis that can and will continue even after the natural disaster has moved on. A Natural Disaster is an event such as a flood, earthquake, tornado, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life. When these disasters strike they normally come with little or no warning and not all of us are prepared for these moments.
Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc over a five-day span, starting in Texas and ending in Louisiana. The hurricane hit Texas on Friday August 25, 2017 and according to Business Insider, the Hurricane has caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Hurricane Harvey has destroyed over 20,000 homes and has claimed over 40 lives as of August 31,2017, and the numbers continue to rise.
It can seem like a chore to be prepared just "in case," but this storm has been the worst natural disaster in the United States in the last thirty years, and knowing history tends to repeat itself, it really is important for all of us to make sure we are prepared ahead of time during these stormy seasons. One convince store in Houston reportedly charged $20.00 for a gallon of gas, $8.50 for a bottle of water, and $99.00 for a case of water. In these situations, having an emergency supply for your family is what you need to start thinking about now. You need to make sure to plan so you are prepared when an unexpected disaster strikes.
So, if you live in those areas that do often have these occurrences please, please think about safety and survival. In These moments, the most important focus is to have enough drinking water and non-perishable food for your family. There are these emergency water pouches that are available for these types of situations. There are foods that are designed for emergency situations, like food bars or even freeze-dried food that can be prepared without electricity.
In case you need to be found you would also want to have a survival whistle to be heard and a hand size mirror or high-powered flash light to reflect or shine light that can be used to communicate your location to emergency personnel. On top of this list of items, you will want to have a first aid kit nearby as well. The best part about having these items is that they are lightweight, compact and very cost effective.
Also make sure to make plans with your family in case you are ever in a devastating storm, because it is in your best interest that every member of your family is safe and sound. Make sure they are aware of where to meet up in case they are separated, what the safest areas of the house are, the best escape routes in an emergency, and where to find first aid supplies, emergency tools, and your emergency food and water.
As always, keep safe! CPR Savers and First Aid Supply offers emergency and survival items that are available online.
