National Safety Month 2021

National Safety Month 2021

June is National Safety Month where we take this opportunity to learn how we can create a safer environment for your home, work, and community. An essential part of improving safety standards is to be able to identify safety risks and act accordingly. Safety is a more crucial part of our lives now more than ever before. The importance of safety does not take a break when you clock off and leave work. Identifying and understanding the safety risks in and out of work will make it easier to learn how to adapt our lifestyles to live a safer life.

Mental Health

One of the biggest safety hazards in the workforce is stress. Stress can have a big effect on a person’s mental and physical health. The health effects of stress can lead to higher absenteeism, more turnover, and loss of productivity for organizations. There are many strategies that an organization can implement in the workplace to assist employees and reduce stress in the work environment. The National Safety Council provides support to help employers navigate their role in addressing mental health in the workplace by providing informational courses and various resources to educate the employers in how to address any issues.

Ergonomics

Musculoskeletal disorders are often caused by overexertion and can affect a worker’s ability to perform many job-related tasks. There is a growing need for affordable interventions that promote musculoskeletal health in the workplace. No matter where workers are, whether they are on a construction site or working in an office, every worksite should be equipet to avoid ergonomic issues. It is important to report any signs of pain right away to a supervisor, safety representative, or Human Resources so they can come up with helpful ways to prevent or lessen any future issues with you and other employees with similar issues.

Creating a Safer Environment

The Total Worker Health program is designed to both protect workers from harm while on the job and also enhance the overall health and well-being of each worker. This program’s approach prioritizes hazard-free work environments that work to protect the safety and health of the workers. It can be very effective to create an atmosphere where the workers feel the organization prioritizes their safety. Creating an atmosphere like this takes leadership support and employee engagement and should require a baseline knowledge of risk management so everyone can be on the same page. Creating a safer work environment is a team effort but the result is a work environment that anyone would enjoy working in.

Driving

The drive to work is an essential part of any worker’s day. It marks the beginning and end of each shift. It just so happens that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of work-related deaths in the U.S. It is important to be able to take steps to prevent motor vehicle crashes caused by fatigued drivers. We all share the roads which is why practicing safe driving is absolutely vital. Staying safe while on the road includes being able to constantly scan the roads for potential hazards that require our full attention.

As the month continues, take a few moments to stop and think about what habits from your daily life you can change to improve your health and safety. The working class is a vital part of our society that should be kept safe and healthy so our society can thrive.
