As summer comes to an end, children are getting ready to trade in their beach bags for school bags. Parents, caregivers, and school staff will be busy preparing for a safe school term. For parents, this is an ideal opportunity to gather items that are essential for keeping their children healthy. Here at CPR Savers, we offer a wide variety and easy to pack school supplies to ensure the safety and health of children.
Getting ready for the new year
Before the school year starts, medical professionals advise families to review their children’s health in detail. The American Academy of Pediatrics. (AAP) recommends prioritizing a visit to the family’s pediatrician for an annual wellness exam and sports physical before the start of the school year. Annual physicals allow pediatricians to address any emotional, developmental, or social concerns that children may have. During the physical, the pediatrician will monitor heart and blood pressure, check vision, and test for diabetes, cholesterol, and anemia. Along with this, pediatricians also use this opportunity to discuss diet, exercise options, and sleeping habits.
The First Day
A new daily routine can feel like a shock to the system, especially after a long relaxing summer. One way to mitigate this is by making changes gradually in advance. A few weeks before school starts, try maintaining a more disciplined routine like sleeping and eating on time. This will make the new schedule more comfortable for your kid to follow and they will feel up to the challenge from the very first day!
Staying healthy at School
The school nurse is the most overlooked resource by the students and parents. The school nurses play a vital role in student healthcare, providing medical information and resources, emotional support, and first-aid care. According to the Nurses’ Association to take full advantage of school resources parents/guardians should:
- Communicate openly with the school and school about the child’s health concerns
- Bring up to date, signed healthcare provider orders for any treatments to be received and all medications to be given at school.
- Pre-plan with the school nurse and other appropriate school officials to develop an individualized healthcare plan or other educational plans as needed.
- Give the school nurse permission to communicate with the family’s healthcare provider.
- Make sure the school has all parent/caregiver contact information and immediately inform them of any changes.
A Healthy Study Environment
Once school begins, students will bring home a variety of homework ranging from home projects to math problems. A serene space free of distractions will better help children earn their best scholastic results. This will also increase their productivity and develop good work ethics. According to a recent study, visually rich surroundings distract children from their studies, while less distracting environments improve their performance.
The results
Prioritizing children’s well-being by implementing health routines in school and at home can help both families and students prepare for returning to school this fall. Even the smallest changes in daily routines and habits can have a meaningful impact on the overall health of the student and improve their outlook for a happy and successful school year.
