As the Labor Day weekend comes up folks will be spending their weekends traveling, having their first picnic, or enjoying taking a swim in the ocean or pool. As much as it is important to have fun it is also equally important to stay safe and practice safety rules as well. Follow these tips to stay safe and relish everything the long weekend has to offer.
Driving Safety
- Make sure that the driver is well rested and alert
- Always wear seatbelts in the vehicle
- Observe the speed limits and follow the rules of the road
- If you plan on drinking designate a driver who won’t drink
- Always focus on the road and avoid distractions like cell phones
- Use caution in work zones
- Don’t follow vehicles too closely
- Make frequent stops
- Clean vehicle lights and windows to help you see especially at night
- Make sure that the vehicle has fuel and make sure that the gas tank doesn’t get too low
- If you do face car troubles pull as far as possible off the highway
- Always carry a First Aid Kit/Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk of the car
- sLet someone know where you are going so that if your car gets stuck along the way they can help you
Grilling Safety
- Always Supervise a barbecue grill when in use
- Never grill indoors
- Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill
- Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire
- Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe
- Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited
- Always have a fire extinguisher present when using the grill
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using grills
Water Safety
- Make sure that everyone in the family learns how to swim well
- Adults must always supervise the children
- Children must always follow the rules
- Do not fool with a pool: fence it in
- Always wear a life jacket when on a boat, jet ski, or other water vehicles
- Try to swim as a pair and near a lifeguard’s chair or within the lifeguard’s vicinity
- Know what to do to help someone in trouble, without endangering yourself; know how and when to call 9-1-1; and know how to do CPR
