As the summer season leaves the cold season winds pick up and begin to completely move across the entire United States. For most people this is usually a sign to get ready for the holidays that are just around the corner. But more importantly, it’s the start of the harsh weather conditions that follow.
Cold winter storms can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice and blistering high winds. So while each region has unique weather conditions, it’s important to always know your surrounding areas and their risk of winter storms. In some cases, these storms turn into blizzards that can last a few hours or several days, they can even knock out power, heat and communications services. These storms can also make strong winds start blowing snow creating whiteout conditions that make roads vanish in front of your eyes.
So, what can you do to avoid the cold, make a plan! That means prepping by creating and communicating a disaster plan ahead of time with your family, friends and neighbors. As well Stocking important item’s before winter hits.
At home and work:
During any storm try to stay indoors, as well as Winterize your home to extend the life of fuel/ supply by insulating walls and attics, caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows.
• Create an emergency plan in case of evacuation.
• Buy or create an emergency first aid kit for your house• Use Rock salt or alternative safe products to melt ice on walkways.
• Stock Sand to help improve traction.
• Keep enough clothing and blankets to keep you warm
• Stock enough heating fuel, like wood or alternatives for fireplaces or wood burning stoves
• Bring pets/ animals inside during winter storms
• Check local news channels and weather radio for critical information and stay alerted to changing weather conditions
In vehicles and driving:
It is best to avoid traveling in snowy or cold conditions but if necessary, DRIVE VERY CAUTIOUSLY AND DRIVE SLOWLY. Thousands of people are injured or killed every year in traffic accidents related to slippery roads from winter storms.
It is also very important to prep your vehicle for winter, this can include; checking Antifreeze levels, Battery and ignition system, Brakes, Heater and defroster, Lights, flashing hazard lights, engine and transmission Oil. Most importantly, before you leave the house during a storm especially on a long trip, make sure to carry a winter storm kit for the road that includes the following:
• First-aid kit• Mobile phone, charger, batteries
• Blankets/sleeping bags
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• Knife
• High-calorie, non-perishable food
• Extra clothing to keep dry
• Empty can to use as emergency toilet
• Sack of sand or cat litter for traction
• Shovel
• Windshield scraper and brush
• Tool kit
• Tow rope
• Battery booster cables
• Water container
• Candle and matches to provide light and in an emergency
• Compass and road maps, don't depend on mobile device
Once the storm hits:
• Stay indoors and dress warmly.• Prepare for power outages.
• Use generators outside only.
• Listen for emergency information and alerts.
• Look for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
• Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow.
• Drive only if necessary and be aware of evacuation routes.
• Know your area’s emergency plans, and where warming centers will be.
