Oral Health Month

Oral Health Month

April is Oral Health Month where we take the time to reflect and understand our own oral health so we can create a better oral hygiene routine to improve our health. This month we should take time to consider the preventive steps we can take to make sure our mouth and the rest of our bodies are healthy.

It is very important to take care of your oral health. If you neglect to take care of your oral health it can lead to many issues including sore or bleeding gums, missing teeth, infections, and oral pain. All these issues can and will force you to change certain aspects of your life like enjoying any type of food you want when you want it; it can make you more self-conscious and limit your ability to socialize; and it can have an effect on your whole body and your overall health.

Your routine is vital to maintaining proper oral and overall physical health. The first step to ensuring a proper routine starts with making healthy food choices. It is best to limit foods with high sugar because the bacteria in your mouth loves sugar and over time that bacteria can destroy the enamel on your teeth and cause cavities to form. It is also best to avoid acidic foods and beverages like orange juice, processed meats, and carbonated drinks. These foods and beverages can also wear down your enamel through a process known as tooth erosion. Tooth erosion can not only change the appearance of your teeth but also lead to tooth sensitivity and increase the risk of cavities and infections.

Besides being aware of the types of foods you consume, it is also important to practice good oral hygiene habits. Habits include keeping your mouth clean by brushing and flossing your teeth everyday. It is best to use a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Ensure you brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Smoking can also have a huge impact on your oral health. The nicotine and tar found in tobacco can cause your teeth to yellow and eventually turn brown. Consistent smoking can also lead to gum disease and increase your risk for throat and lung cancer. Overall, smoking can cause severe damage to your teeth, gums, and mouth so it is best to quit smoking or reduce your nicotine intake.

Along with maintaining a proper oral health routine, it is also important to schedule regular dental appointments. By going to the dentist and receiving a cleaning, your dental professional can use special tools to remove tar from your teeth. Your teeth will also be polished to help remove surface stains and flossed to make sure all areas of your mouth are clean. Dental professionals also perform an examination to check for cavities, to check your gum health, and to examine your tongue, throat, neck, face, and head for signs of swelling or redness in case of infection.

It's Oral Health Month, a time to remember the impact good oral health can have on your overall health and why it is important to not neglect proper oral hygiene. Take advantage of Oral Health Month and make sure you can continue to live a healthy life by following proper oral care routines.
